How to Buy a Used Guitar

With the rising costs of gas and our falling stock market, people are more cautious with what they purchase. One of the ways to cut back is by purchasing used items. Before you look for a used guitar, I suggest you visit a few music stores first to see what they have to offer and also what the price range is of various guitars. They may be even less than used instruments. When you have an idea of what's available, try checking your paper for used guitars at garage sales, or in classified ads. Craigslist.com is also a good resource. I do not recommend buying a used guitar off ebay because you want to see it before you purchase it. Check to make sure that the instrument does not have any cracks and that the neck is straight. You can also try to put a business card underneath the bridge to make sure it's not coming loose. Bridges can pop off and are quite expensive to repair. The bridge is the piece of wood that secures the strings to the body of the instrument. Try playing each note of the guitar. Make sure there are no buzzes. Sometimes the frets are wrong and the instrument will always buzz. Happy Shopping!

I used to buy used guitars and often walked away when they had structural problems. It can cost more to repair a guitar than to buy one new!
